i have a 87 omc 3 liter with a cobra out drive that i just bought and saw that the lower hose on the out drive is cracked in several places.it is located between the transome and out drive and is about 4 inchs round and has ribbs on it like the old radiator hoses.was going to take it to the lake but was scared that it would leak water into the boat...what is that hose for and what is it called so i can get a new one.

i believe that "hose" is called your bellows and your right to replace it if its cracking, should be done every 3 years or so. bellows will sink a boat if they are not maintained!

Howdy,

You have two "hoses" down there (#76 and #31 below). A drive shaft "Bellows" and an exhaust bellows.... picture below from http://epc.brp.com

You might be seeing the exhaust bellows. They normally have "cracks" to drain..... and allow for reduced exhaust (back)pressure.....

THe larger of the two is the drive shaft bellows, if it's cracked, or leaking you WILL have SERIOUS problem VERY soon and may have already.......

If you have not removed your drive and checked the u-joints, gimbal bearing and bellows now would a great time to do it.

Get an OEM OMC service manual if you want to do it yourself.

That's what I said in my previous post.....You might be seeing the exhaust bellows. They normally have "cracks" to drain..... and allow for reduced exhaust (back)pressure....."

Those cracks are actually slits..........It's designed that way....an exhaust relief "thing"!

I'll also add that my previous Hi Tech Wonderful 460 King Cobra ran for about 15 years with the exhaust bellows MISSING! No one seemed to know the difference....or care for that matter:rolleyes:

Cheers,

Rick
