Just changed the thermostat in my 83 15 hp Rude and test ran it in the tank yesterday. From the looks of the old thermostat, it looks like it was stuck in one position. Dont's know if it was open or shut.

What temp should the engine get to and how do I test it for that temp? It was hot to touch.

You will know if it's too hot, if you can't hold your hand on the head without having to remove it immediately . The engine normally runs about 140 -150 degrees. You can get a 160# Thermomelt stick at the dealer or possibly an auto parts store, and make a mark with it on the head. If it melts, it's too hot.

SaliormannJ
I agree should be able to hold finger on block for about a count of 4. Running in tank make sure get water deep enough that the water pump is in the water. Water pumps running in air will not suck up water. Put your Old thermostat in a pan and heat it up should be able to see it open at about 150 degrees.
