99 200 johnson is the motor. yesterday had it running in the yard with the garden hose and flush muffs hooked up. switched off the motor and was leaning over to look at something under boat and happened to lean against the mid section of the engine. have never noticed before but it seemed to be pretty warm. does this sound normal? i know the exhaust exits thru this section but i have always thought there was a separate exhaust passage inside. also notice what appears to be some exhaust escaping from seam where lower unit attachs to mid section. is that normal or do i have a leak inside somewhere?? thanks in advance

Re: hot mid section

All is normal.

There is a seperate passage in the mid section, yet the outer still gets warm.

Exhaust exiting that seam is also normal. Ther is no seal there.

Remember, the muffs do not keep the leg full of water like running in the lake would.

Re: hot mid section

You will get some heat transfer to the mid section when running on the hose, but by your description it sounds like you may have a failed or unseated inner exhaust housing seal.Is there more heat concentrated in one area of the mid section?Has the lower unit been dropped recently for service?
