Hot trolling motor

My Motor Guide trolling motors' power cord gets hot after a few minutes. Where it plugs into the socket on the bow has actually melted a little bit. What causes this? Thanks.

To small wires for the current being pulled through. Should be a 8 or a 6 gauge.

Make sure all the connections are clean and tight. A loose or corroded connection can run hot, this includes the pins of the connector.

If that checks out, look into the wiring size as MH suggests.
