Hot water temp control for boiler?

Is there an "automatic" mixing valve that can be installed on my boiler to keep the hot tap water at a preset temperature?

My boiler has a coil in it for hot tap water. There is a cold water bypass (with simple gate valve) that mixes cold in the hot output side to lower the temp.

Looking for a better solution to this OEM setup.

Hi Mark

Don't see why you couldn't install a thermostatic anti-scald mixing valve inline at the boiler. Similar to what you would use off a hot water heater line. That would take care of it automatically. Just a thought...

Hydronic heating is very popular here, so there are also lots of those tankless hot water coil setups. All the systems I've seen use a device called a Tempering Valve, which works exactly like that anti-scalding valve Rick is talking about.

You usually see them cranked all the way to "hot" and most systems have a flow regulator (flow restrictor) built into the hot end to keep the resupply of hot water sufficient. It looks like a large pipe coupling, but it'll have x.xGPM stamped into it. A lot of people opt to instead use an electric tank (using the old coil for pre-heating) or one of those recirculating tank setups. If you go down that road, be sure to find and remove the flow regulator so you can get decent "pressure" on your shower.

Thanks guys! That tempering valve is what I'm looking for.

Need to keep the hot water temp down so the little ones don't get scalded (and there is a temp control in the tub/shower valve) and keep the older one and the guests from steaming the crap out of the bathroom before getting into the shower. Not to mention the $$$ just going right down the drain while they heat the bathroom with the steam....
