hot wires on tilt and trim

i have a 1979 85 hp johnson the tilt and trim wires get hot when i use it and have blon several fuses any idea why

When wiring heats up it is an indication of internal corrosion and resistance. They need to be replaced. While you are at it replace/polish your connections.

If all wiring on the boat is of about the same age, your ignition wiring is likely on its way out. You can voltage drop test it to ensure there wont be a problem, and replace any wiring that is faulty. This is another area where clean tight connections is crucial.

Without checking this a future post of yours may be "My outboard wont turn over."

ok fine then i have decided to re wire the whole system to the switch what is the proper guage wire to use i would go back with what is their but it has adout 10 splices in the wire already with different size wire thanks

Use 12 gauge.

What is the original wires coming off the trim motor?

All of those splices could be a factor also...

yeah i think the splices and combination of corrison not taking any chances just gonna rewire its easier than troubleshooting the trouble spot looks like about 16 guage originaly but 12 will not hurt

Sorry I mis typed that, I meant to ask what colour is the original wiring coming off the trim motor?
