In the late 80's and early 90's I built and raced 2 & 4 stroke quads in the north fla motorcross circut. Mostly copping other builders sucesses. Many things can be done to 2-strokes ie port timing, extra finger ports, light weight pistons, carbs, ligthen flywheel, carbon reeds ect... I have searched over the internet to find that not many people hotrod their own boat engines. Wouldn't a small light weight high hp engine be a bennifit?

Re: Hotrod Mercury

That's all well and good in a racing environment, but people with fishing boats are looking more for reliability, not out and out horsepower that is temperamental and needs a team of mechanics to make it go from weekend to weekend.

Most boat owners use their boat on one day of a weekend, put it away and forget about it until a month later. Then expect the engine to fire right up and run perfectly....

I see your point, and I hope you see mine....

Re: Hotrod Mercury

Racing calls for an entirely different performance profile than boating for fun or fishing.

I modified 2 strokes for Kart racing, but I would never want one of those engines on a fishing boat.

There's some guys over on screamandfly.com that do just that. Go take a look.

Re: Hotrod Mercury

Big difference between a quad and a boat motor...ie: exhaust back pressure from water, fixed gear ratio, water drag untill running surface drys off, weight and center of gravity. Raising port timing moves the rpm/hp range up but you sacrifice grunt on bottom end, that why race boats hulls are light. Most improvements can be seen on a looper engine but less on crossflow as limited to cast in chamber, piston "eyebrow",restrictive reed block and intake design, low transfer port area, restrictive exhaust....

One of the things I don't like about my Merc outboard is the noise level. I have heard of ways to hotrod outboards by modding the exhaust. Problem is they become really obnoxious. I like to be able to talk to my passengers while cruising.

When my motocross bike used to blow up I could walk back to the truck.

Can't do that in a boat.
