I bought a 75 850 and was able to get everything with it including the power trim and merccontrol. The only thing is didn't have was a key. My wiring harness has already been cut halfway between the merccontrol and the engine. I want to try to start it up just to see if it runs and if not i'm going to part it out. So I'm looking how I can hot wire it to try to test it so I grabbed the wiring diagram from maxrules. What it looks like to me is if I hook up the positive and negative battery cables then twist the red and white wires together then the system is on and all i have to do at that point is engage the starter. None of the other wires in the harness at the mercontrol are necessary for the engine to run.

Am I right or wrong?

I don't know for sure but in the movies they just grab some wires from under the dash and yank them out then spark two of them together and off you go.

If that motor has a distributor (it should), connect up the battery. Watch out for shorts. Test the red wire on the switchbox for voltage. If it has +12VDC, use a jumper to connect it to the adjacent white wire. That should give spark, if the ign system is good.

If you get it started, how will you shut it off?

Thanks Chris. Thats what it looks like to me after studying the wiring diagram.

GA_Boater, disconnecting the red wire from the white wire should do the same thing as turning the key off. This thing doens't run off the stator. It has a distributor.
