We have just purchased our first boat. The hour meter is constantly clicking away when the key is in the ignition. Should it only be working when the motor is actually running?

Kay,

OK, I give up. What is an "Air Meter"? Or are you referring to an "Amp" Meter? More info please.

Rick

Re: Hour Meter

Kay, are you talking about HOUR METER? I would guess so based on your description.

And the answer is: the hour meter should run with the ignition key in On/Run position.

Happy boating
Lou

Re: Hour Meter

It is really the hour meter(air) it is clicking the entire time the battery is connected - even if the ignition is not on.

Re: Hour Meter

Should be pretty easy to hit Radio Shack and pick-up a toggle switch.

Re: Hour Meter

You can either rewire the meter to the hot side of the key switch or install a battery cut out switch.

The meter should only run with the key on. If you want to listen to a radio/cassette/cd then put that on an independant switch. Leaving a key on w/o the motor running can (slowly) burn your ignition system up.

Bob

Re: Hour Meter

Hello Kay,
I recently installed an hour(fun)meter on my new boat.
The meter should only operate in run postion of the key.
If your boat is new, the dealer improperly rigged it and they should correct it for you.
If you are mechanically inclined, there may be multiple wires to choose from. For instance, if your gauges are lit when the key is in run position you can jump off of that wire. However, a simple continuety check can be done with a test light/ volt meter for the proper wire.

Re: Hour Meter

sounds to me that the "hot" wire for the hour meter is hook up to the incoming "hot" wire on the ("BATT" terminal) ignition switch....should be hooked to the "IGN" terminal on the back of the key switch... the other wire on the hour meter goes to ground.....
