Well, it is almost spring. You may not be able to tell around here with the snow that is on the ground. I was looking forward to getting my boat ready, but got side-tracked.

My wife decided she was going to do a painting project in the kitchen. Maybe take down the drop ceiling and paint the walls and cabinets.

Well like any other project in my house and maybe yours too, it has turned into a whole kitchen remodel. She insists it is her project. Plastering, electric, move natural gas line, flooring, ceiling fan, new lights, move the kitchen sink and all the plumbing, new hood/microwave, cabinets, phone line, remove 2 false ceilings to get to the original, sell 2 month old portable dishwasher and get one so I can build it in.

I don't mind the hard work, but I sure hope I have time to get to the boat in a month or so. Well, I better get my tail back to work. I also better get a second job, because I have to find some way to pay for this.

If this is "her project", why are you doing the work and paying for it? Give her a hammer, grab your tacklebox, and run for the hills.

Yup, when the wife gets a notion to re-feather the nest, you better get in feather-collection mode. Nothing else really matters at this point. The sooner you collect the necessary feathers, the faster you're back in the boat.

Don't even get me started.

Plumbing-hah!!! My plumbing projects end up chasing leaks all the way down to the main line at the street. A good one does not involve the City water folks coming out. :(

Re: House project gone awry

I can hear where your coming from scoop. Was in the middle of a "let's get the garage re-done" project when I come home from work one day and she herself says to me "Don't go upstairs". I knew right then I was in deep do-do. We have been doing a little to the house here and there getting ready for retirement in a year or so. So I gathered my strength and went upstairs. The granddaughters bedroom was partially gutted. My house is old being built in 1902 so everything is lath and plaster with a liberal coating of soot and coal dust from when a coal furnace was in the house. Three walls lay in the middle of the floor. So she herself says "We'll only do a couple walls and get the rest later". DUH-HUH!!! I said "you got three down already, why stop?" Now to the point why I "feel" for ya'. I got my regular job, a 12 hour shift job at a power plant and my shop which I intend to retire to when I retire. The shop is pretty much a 12 hour a day job also. Now finding time to take on another 12 hour a day job is tuff to say the least. But today we put the sub=floor down and it's ready for carpet and it be done! So I do know where your coming from and I do "FEEL" for ya'.
Did I mention the project sort of "migrated into the upstairs hallway, the spare room and down the steps.
I'm going to need some serious counseling after this one!

Sounds like the ever present "While you have the tools out...." syndrome here. I bet there is not a married man alive that has not been through this. Of course when i do something like this and tackle one importiant project and a couple others that were not pressing but required the same tools and such I am wasting time and should have done such and such.

I hate renovating with a woman over your sholder. Put ceramic tile in the bathroom, no problem. Mount towel rods where she marked them, problem - She didn't like them there, wanted them moved. Moved rods, filled holes, not good enough, new tile only, replaced tile with the holes and regrouted. She found out one towel rod hit her in the butt when she would bend over to dry herself. Move towel rod again   .

Long story short, towel rods back in their orignal spot!

No wonder places have strict codes, it helps us men to stay within certain limits without her choice! :D

Crabby the problem with that is having someone else do it costs so dadgum much and I don't want her to feel like she needs to "negoitate" with someone else to get the job done if you know what I mean.

Sure Crab Bait, a friend of mine which is not dumb or stupid tried that idea. Now his exwife is married to the contractor he hired to do the work.

I think I will still be a slave to my wife, at least I get the nookie when I want and she gets it when she wants it. Plus keeping her happy gets me my free time to do with the way I want.

SS

Re: House project gone awry

I don't mind the work. The kitchen needed the remodel. I am getting points by the day. I even suggested moving the stove today which meant the 2 hours spent at the home center designing the cabinets this morning had to be totally redone.

I knew if it was not done, then she would not have enough storage space.

If I don't do it, then she will hire a contractor. It will cost me 3 times as much, then I have someone come into my turf and do things I may not like. They also bring things up like, well if this is going to be done, then you have to bring this up to code etc.

In this project I did find that one of the lights that we have been using had electrical connections that were barely twisted together and then poorly taped. When I moved the fixture, the dried out tape popped off. Good thing I had turned the power off.

The house was built in 1904. The kitchen was majorly remodeled in 1941 (We found a date in the false ceiling. Another false ceiling was put in during the 60's or 70's. In '41 they put in a false floor, then linoleum, then in the 70's or 80's the put in another layer.

I spent the day pulling out the false floor and linoleum. The new cabinet design will let me keep the sink drain and supplies in the same place. I just have to move the gas line.

I know I will get some fishing time out of this, I just don't know when. Cabinets will be ready in about 5 weeks. Well, take out dinner is here, gotta go.

I'm back. I actually don't mind the plumbing. I use copepr and it is eay to work with. A good clean joint is all you need. I will have to do some ripping out and replumbing the ustairs bathroom after the kitchen is mostly finished.

The upstairs bathroom was built in 1917. The shower leaked due to a previous owner using PL adhesive to hold the wall tile tp the wall instead of using thinset. I ripped it out 4 years ago and have not finished it yet but it is close. It should have been done this month. It is hard to get the right stuff when everyone only sells those things to contractors.

The plaster and lathe can be a pain. We have a wall that needs to be redone. I spoke with an old guy that did plaster over lathe. He said that I cannot get the stuff that is needed. I will have to use board then plaster it using regular plaster myself.

My wife is doing a lot of the work. She is taking down all the wall paper and took down the ceilings.

The electric took me a couple weekends and now I will have to so some more. The house is wired with knob and tube so everything needs to be replaced.

I have posted a couple pictures here
Scoops Painting gone awry
