Houseboat roof

Getting ready to repair rotten wood on roof of houseboat only a few places where rails connected to roof deck. My question is can I use Bondo resin and glass matte instead of that expensive marine resin? When I am through I will be re coating my entire roof with 10 yr elastomeric rubber coating. Which is the current coating. Would this Bondo method work as well as the wet marine resin. Especially since it's not immersed in water. Appreciate the help everyone ty

Depending on how big of area your fixing I think the bondo stuff you buy at the home improvement stores will cost more probably .. You can use it just remember that it contains wax . So if it cures between coats it must be sanded and wiped with acetone before the next layer of glass .. If your gunna be walking on the roof I would suggest using some more structural cloth like 1708 bi-axle .

comparing lowes to my local fiberglass shop

a gallon of bondo brand resin with wax in it is $40

a gallon of "expensive marine resin" is between $20 and $30 depending on the resin you get

not to mention, 1708 is only $5.70 per yard vs the bondo brand which is about $10 per yard

a gallon of Bondo putty is about $40, a gallon of light-weight fairing compound is about $25

it really does cost less to use the right products

Actually, Bondo resin does not come in a real gallon. 0.9 gallons, so it's even more expensive that way. the quarts are real quarts at least though

Only thing is by the time you pay for hazardous shipping on the cheapest resin. It ends up being more than 40 bucks a gallon here.

I get the MEK and 1.5 oz chopped strand in batches for bodywork because it is cheaper online if you buy a lot. And resin is easier cheaper locally.
