I have an F150 V6, I have always used Mobile 1 5W30 synthetic and Mobile 1 oil filter, lately i've not been able to do my own oil changes, therefore i take my truck to a little shop nearby, i get the feller there to change the oil and filter, on the oil cap it clearly states 5W30, i have recently found out that he had put 10W30 in my truck during the last two times that he did the oil change, i questioned him about it and his reply was " that don't matter much, the 10W30 is better for it anyways". I got really pissed off at the guy, i can't repeat what else that i told him here, but it ended with me yelling that it was the last time that he ever get my business.
I am hoping that i don't develop any problems with my truck because of this.
Maybe the various oil experts here on the forum can give me the bad news or some peace of mind

Its not a problem in your climate, but I would use the recomended weight next time, you will get slightly better mileage. You can extend out to at least 7,500 miles with Mobil1 if you so desire with no adverse affects. If I were towing when it gets hot there I would use 10W-30.

It could in theory effect your mileage.

Thanks for the good news, i was really worried that in using the wrong weight oil, something serious could or may have occured.
The truck runs great and there have never been any signs of problems, perhaps i owe the feller down at the garage an apology, i will stop by his shop one day this week

Honestly, I dont think you do. If as you stated, it says 5W-30 on the oil fill cap, he had a lot of odasity putting anything else in it. Maybe he was just out of the right oil, or maybe he is a self proclaimed oil specialist like I am. :p :p

As to why I changed my User name? Guess I just got tired of LubeDude and dont want to be known for any one thing. Hmmmm I was the Oil guy, now Im the Bass guy. Not very good logic!!!! Im still going to answer oil related questions though to the best of my knowledge. Limited as it is.

TheOilDoc deffinatly knows his stuff, but you never get anything from him but by the book answers, maybe thats not a bad thing, but you can find what he says in your owners manual. I have made a pact with myself that I wont harrass him anymore, but I may have a hard time sticking to it.

Re: How about an oil question?

My Brother is the manager of Jiffylube and when I took my old S-10 in for an oil change the cap said 5-30 but he put 10-40 in. I asked him about it and he said that is only applicable to vehicles with lower mileage. My truck had around 185K miles at the time. I thought about it and it makes sense.
The S-10 developed a bad oil leak so I started putting 20-50 in it and it ran fine.

If you get into a cold climate with that oil in it you may twist the oil pump shaft right off. Ive seen it happen.

Another self proclaimed oil expert that has his head you know where!!! Hes looking to lose his job and posably get sued if he is doing this where he works unless it says in the owners manual that its ok to use that weight!

Re: How about an oil question?

If the s-10 says 5w30 on the cap, would that apply anywhere or only in warm climates?

I would think that if the manufacturer recommends 5W30, then it should not matter what the climate is, unless it is stated in your manual that another weight of oil is preferable in certain temps and weather conditions.

That's what I was thinking, most manuals list a range of weights depending on ambient temps so how can a cap that says 10w30 apply everywhere.

A friend of mine took his limited edition street racing Corvette into Jiffy Lube. They put the wrong lube in the tranny - which blew to the tune of a $7,000.00 replacement. Jiffy Lube denies responsibility. My friend has sued them for $140,000.00 and has the documentation and oil samples of what they did. It is scheduled for trial later this year.

Re: How about an oil question?

as taking this from a motor builder the tolerances on new motors is a lot closer than in the years past that's the reason for thinner oil.if the oil is thick it wont fill the smaller tolerances in the as quick as a thinner not being a s a.thats just a fact.

No the leak didn't stop. It was a rear main leak that leaked about a quart a week. Nothing would have stopped it.

I think Jiffylube only carries three or four weights of the bulk oil that pumps through the dispenser. If your car requires a different weight oil I assume their going to pump the closest weight in your car that they have on hand.

Re: How about an oil question?

When in school they taught us that the rings flex under compression, and set up a ware pattern on the cyl walls (ring grove) normaly the heavier the vis. the more the flex. On a high milage motor switching from a higher vis like straight 30 wt. to a lighter vis like 20 wt. could cause less flex, allowing the rings to contact the ring grove and breaking the ring. When buying a used vehicle always find out what oil the previous owner ran in it, and continue using it.
