I grabbed the wrong tube and topped off my power trim & tilt resevoir with outdrive gear oil instead of power trim/ tilt fluid. Maybe took a few ounces, not really sure.

Is this serious enough that I should drain & refill with the correct fluid or not that big a deal? What problems might I cause if i leave it as is?

Thanks.

I don't know how gear lube would effect the o rings and etc. in the trim, might not hurt at all other it would be stiff in cold weather, just pull the hoses at the cyls and flush it out it's good to flush it out once in a while any way it gets rid of some of the junk in the system---Bob

If it was mine, I would change it, but let us know if it has any ill effects on that powersteering cylinder/valve assembly. They only cost a few hundred bucks for a 50 cent mistake.

Think I'll drain & refill. But is powersteering cylinder/valve assembly connected to power trim/tilt system? I know they have seperate fluid resevoirs... Forgot to mention it's an '89 4.3L Cobra...

Power trim and power steering on your boat share the same type of fluid, but only in product name. The trim fluid does not mix with the steering fluid in their respective resevoirs (not connected)

I would not be too concerned as both fluids deal with seals and orings. If you find the trim working poorly, you can drain the resevoir, fill it with the correct oil,and keep doing this until it works ok.

As I recall, older trim systems used 10w-30 or 10w-40,which is 'thicker' than the trim fluid we use now.

DHP

PS:I would do the same if you put gear oil in the power steering resevoir, but I'd be more concerned,as it operates off a 'trigger' that powers the steering action, and 'thicker' oil may affect steering response.

Super Duh------ Somehow I read Power steering instead of power trim, and no they are not interconnected.

Hopefully it is. After I realized that I had used the wrong tube I was thinking maybe I had experienced an early alzheimers moment, lol.
