How Bad is it Broke?

Alright, so I don't know how bad it is, but I am sure you guys can tell me. A few days ago, I started up the engine (Volvo Penta 4.3 GL 190 hp), and 30 secs into it I realized I still had the outdrive up while she was sitting in the lift. I immediately shut it off and put the outdrive down. Restarted and let her idle for about 15 mins while I continued to clean up the boat. I shut the engine off and came back a half hour later cause we were going to head out on the lake. When I would turn the key it would turn over but not fire up. Tried about 3 times, then choked it. After I choked it, and tried......nothing. When the key was in the off position, it started to turn over on it's own. I turned the key on/off real quick and it stopped. Then a plume of smoke came out of the carb. That's when I left it alone and went and did some research online.

Upon my research I thought maybe the sea pump got a little hot and the impeller was fried. I checked it today, and it looks fine. The sea pump is brand new as of April, so there was barely any wear on that or the impeller. I got the pump re assembled and thought I'd give it a try and this is how she sounds:

Sounds like you need to charge the battery to start with.

Sounds excactly like how my starter was when my motor hydro locked. At the very least your starter is shot. I pulled my spark plugs and they were sitting in water.
I do agree with Don though. First make sure your battery is good.

The battery is fully charged, and its a brand NEW starter. Literally...was just put in like a month ago.

Your starter solenoid is not engaging...That is it does not move forward and engage the fly wheel. Ok quick redneck trick. Take a hammer and tap the starter before and while its spinning..That may induce engagement..Lift two inches and rap it..that should be hard enough to get engagement but not hard enough to break the paint or leave a small dent.

Be damm careful your NOT in danger if the motor starts. i cannot stress that enough...A 100 dollar starter or a body part..which one is priceless...;)

Ok - I'll give that a shot tomorrow. So, is there any reason why my brand spanking new solenoid would not be engaging after the motor ran without any water cooling it for 30 or so seconds?

Will do.

Brand spanking new solenoid huh. Well take it off (starter) and get it right.... Sorry about that i grew up in a garge...that was simply a echo of a bunch of grabbby old mech's hav'n fun with me more than a few yrs ago..:D. Im sitting here trying to remeber rebuilding a gm starter. And if i remeber correctly the bushing's were not pressed in right....:D

Your a long ways form a locked engine.

Explaining why the engine won't crank after you ran the pump dry for a bit is easy. The two issues are not related. You have a starter issue that is not related to a cooling issue. The bendix is not engaging the flywheel. So the solenoid is not shifting it to mesh with the flywheel. Why that is not happening has nothing to do with the pump.

you will know you fixed the engine cranking issue when you turn the key and those belts start to move...aka the engine is rotating.

Good clarification i should have used the term bendix..its been awhile but i still hate that sound with a passion. It's worse the dry chalk on a chalk board..:D

Re: How Bad is it Broke?

I rapped on the solenoid a few times before cranking her, but nadda. I haven't had a chance to get someone else in there with me to try it when it's turning over. I did however find this when reading up on Hydro Locking from Reel-hip's post, which could be the answer to why the new starter is could be shot.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrolock

"Since the starter mechanism's torque is normally much lower than the engine's operating torque and momentum this will usually not damage the engine but may burn out the starter."
