My motor starts and idles fine. It just doesnt seem to have the get up and go it should have. I have checked the spark and all cylinders are fireing when you crank the motor. I can see where the stator has been warm before as the plastic has melted in a few places.

Well yes. A bad stator can affect performace. If its bad enough it will keep you from starting the motor. If it were mine I would replace the stator as melted plastic is not normal. Have you tested it according to your manual?

Have you done a compression test. That is the first thing you should check. I had a similar problem did a compression test and found 2 cylinders with 0 compression.

Melted stator is no good, but there might be other problems.
It needs replacing regardless.

And you can't do a spark test with sparkplugs by the way.

I have located a good used one. I did a spark test with a gap tester set at 7/16" and seemed to have good spark. My tach seems to have issues as it will work then just fall dead and may or may not come back on. IS the rectifier part of the stator? Would it need replaced also? Seems to be charging well.
