I am outta here for 10 days (biz), so I won't see if this thread lives or dies until I get online again. I have a few issues with his speech, but they are minor considering the context.

My question is: How, if you take this speech literally (important word), can you hate this man?

Call it a troll if you want, but I am genuinely curious.

Easy QC. Yep! in spite of all his imperfections he represents the traditional middle road of America.

The persistant Trotzkyite left continues to try to paint him as radical right wing. They want POWER so bad that they continue to put forth the laughable likes of Ted Kennedy to denigrate him.

Have a good trip and Viva Alito. :p

Re: How can anybody hate this man?

You mistake questioning and criticizing his policies and tactics with some sort of personal hate.

I certainly don't hate him, and I don't know anyone who does. I don't like many of his policies.

This is America, after all, and differences of opinion are to be celebrated as healthy, and not confused with hate.

I don't like the tone of much of the debate in this country--whether originated from Michael Moore or Rush Limbaugh.

The president did not help the situation, IMO, when he misstated the opposing point of view for political purposes. It doesn't lend itself to honest debate

Thank you for the parting gesture questionable cat.
Hate is an all inclusive thing that is absent logic and reason, garbage in garbage out.

Same as you do with every other spokes-mouth; you embrace those things said that align with your agenda (or if you are a liberal, you embrace those things said that align with the agenda you were given), and then you trounce on all of the rest. It's not like anyone know the diff one way or the other, or that it even matters for that point.

Re: How can anybody hate this man?

I truly believe PW when he says he does not hate our President. I also believe the majority of Democrats do not hate the man, only a handful of his ideas, which he is very outspoken about.

However, the vocal minority of the FAR LEFT WING do see to get confused with the difference between the man's politics and the man himself. They loath President Bush for everything he stands for. These are the ones I have trouble understanding.

I didn't listen to the speech. Don't care. Doesn't matter which party is in power. State of the Union is just another opportunity for politicians to do more pontificating. History proves that little becomes of these.

To me, it's like listening to Charlie Brown's teacher..Wha, wha....wha, wha, wha, wha, wha....

Other than I listened to the speech: I agree with KaGee. I like to watch the gallery's response; they sure show their hand, both sides.

Re: How can anybody hate this man?

The far right wing is clearly as bad as the far left wing in propogating this environment of marginalizing political opponents.

All you have to do is listen to Rush Limbaugh for two minutes and you are going to hear a two dimentional caricature cartoon characterization of the political opposition. It may make for good radio, (not for me) but it does nothing to elevate the debate.

And when the president talks about the "Terrorist surveilance program" as if the opposition opposes surveilling terrorists it is at best disingenuous, and tiring. There is not a single democrat that I have heard of that has any problem at all with surveillance of terrorists.
They just want the program independently reviewed to make sure that is all we are doing, and follow the constitution with a check on the power.

If there is a problem with the FISA law, then let's review it and fix it. It was put in place originally for a reason, and that was abuses by a former unchecked administration, and people being people, unchecked power is a dangerous thing in anyone's hands of any political party. I don't think that is difficult to understand.

And if you are part of Al Qaida and are surprised your phone might be tapped, well then I'm not sure what to tell you.

Exactly!

However, overall it was a good speech which should have had some appeal to all the masses regardless of their politcal leanings.

It's ashame we will never see much of his requests come to fruition, but he made a galliant effort IMHO.

Yeah!!! Ditto me into KaGee's brilliant observation, too. Don't have a clue what was said, don't care.

KaGee, I did not listen either although I started too. However, I bet you and I can tell what GW said and what the Demo response was. Politics by all, none good for us.

While the rest of you waste your time posting about the speech, a perfect opportunity to talk trash about QC is being squandered. ;)

Re: How can anybody hate this man?

It's not that I hate him, I just don't trust him.

I recall W stating that we have to develop hydrogen and its use in automobiles a few years ago. Well, I also heard something similar during the S of the U speech. Talk is cheap in my opinion. Energy bill??? What energy bill???

W made the statement that America is addicted to oil. May be true, but he is an oil monger himself. So, does he want to work on his solution to the problem, or just continue to enable it? I heard his solution, but have seen no action. Hydrogen fuel is an alternative right now. We just have no way of getting to the consumers. In my opinion, he does not want H as a fuel source. Too many of the "good ole boys" companies would lose money.

Shortly after a failed attempt to get OBL(few years ago), W said he was not worried about him. Again, during his speech, he said we have to get OBL. Well, which is it. Is he worried about him, or is he not?

I guess my problem with W is that he often says one thing, while his actions show different. I believe he is, at least in part, working from his own agenda, rather than the agenda that is best for most. And I don't mean most of his friends.

CJY, You mean you do not trust the tax benefits and money granted to the Oil companies will not result in alternate fuel. You gotta be kidding. They are just getting by selling oil.
