How can I check a serial number?

I found a nice 73, 50 hp rude. The guy says he has no title, because it came with no title. I want to believe him, but I don't want to get burned. How can I check a boat motor for liens, title ectt.. by serial number in Texas. Any one have a clue, a website would be great?

I just went through getting a title for a boat that the PO did not have, what a headache!

Im not quite sure how things work down there, but in Canada we dont even have to register our outboards, boats and trailers only. Would the licensing dept. not have the info you are looking for?

texas i believe registers or titles outboards, contact Dept Natural resources, or the tag agency. police dept. Florida, does not register, just like buying a pack of gum at the 7 - 11.

I don't know about Texas, but at least here in FL there is a website where you can check for stolen serial numbers that have been reported. I'll bet your county sheriff knows. Better to call him and be safe rather than sorry.

Now, leins--that may be a little more difficult.

hello,

texas registers both boats and boat motors thru the Texas Parks and Wildlife. they have an extensive url. just google them. in texas trailers are a DOT registration... registration is for the current period of use, and titles are for ownership... they transfer titles, etc.
