How can I get licensed for a gun I already have?

Been quite a few gun questions around here...so I guess this would be a good place to ask this. :) I turned 18 a month ago, and I would like to have a gun to take camping with me, for protection (people and animals) as well as target shooting. I already have a gun actually, out in a box somewhere in the garage. It's an old old revolver of my grandpa's that I used to play with when I was little. (no bullets or the revolving part :) ) I would like to use that gun, but of course it's not licensed or anything. How might I go about making that legal? I mean, if I just brought it down to where ever you get the licenses...I'd probably be arrested. :D I'd like to avoid that...

What makes you think a gun has to be registered? Anyway check with a local gunshop for a gunsmith to checkout your grandfathers gun. Always best to get some training before using any piece of equipment. Ask at gunshop, most are very helpful.

Well, I would need some sort of concealed weapon permit wouldn't I? This wouldn't be the first gun I've shot...just the first one I've owned...

You do not need to "register" your gun in Oregon. Only a licenced dealer is required to register a handgun he sells to you.
You do not need to get a concealed handgun permit to carry a gun exposed out in the woods, you do not need the permit to transport the handgun in your vehicle, unloaded and out of easy reach. Trunk, suitcase, etc.
If you want a permit to "carry concealed" go to a local shooting range and ask about their state certified classes. They will have all of the other details you need to obtain a permit.

Be careful. As I remember, its federal law you must be 21 to possess/own a handgun, 18 for a rifle/shotgun!
Not that I agree with this, just telling you what it is!

I started hunting with a handgun at 18. Didn't get teh permit to carry till 21. Sheriff's department will take care of the permit - at least that is the way it is in Pennsylvania. They will need some $, a driver's license or other form of identification, and you will need to complete a form stating that you are sane and not a convicted felon. You will also need a reason to carry a concealed weapon. Then wait a week and go in and pick it up.

So if the gun is unloaded I'm perfectly legal? And it's legal for me to have amunition for the gun? And then it would be legal to shoot it out in the open...as long as I put it away again without bullets?

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO REGISTER?

The best way to have a gun (IMO) is unregistered.
The less Uncle Sam knows what you have, the better!

I have a CCH in Oregon. (Concealed Carry Handgun)

As before mentioned, you must be 21 before you apply, and you must complete a certified class before you can apply.
And NO, the gun does NOT need to be registered (in Oregon) for a CCH.
At the time I took my classes, you can carry anything concealed from a pop gun to a M60 chain gun (if you had the permit for it :D )

I think the basic class has to be at least 4 hours.
The class I took (several years ago) was much longer, but it included some extended training in the laws and gun range.

And now I get to do it ALL over again, cause I let my permit expire. You can't just simply go and renew it. I have to do the class and everything over!
Another way for Oregon to get your money.

Hope the answers help, but I doubt any of us are lawyers here. Your best bet is to call the local Sheriffs office. You have to deal with them directly anyhow when you go for your CCH.

H.
