How can I set a price on an older outboard?

I'm not getting any bites on an old pontoon so I'm considering selling the motor, then selling the rest for scrap. Might do better than my asking price that way anyhow. Problem is I can't get a handle on the value of a good-running 1980 Mariner 40-E. Craigslist and Ebay are all over the map and NADA isn't realistic on values of stuff this old.

Pick a price and run some ads.
Prices are extremely local, and seasonal.
Guessing $200-500 is about right.

Offer up the pontoon as a swimming raft, or a floating dock for folks that aren't allowed to construct a dock on their shoreline. You beach it and anchor it.

My first thought was your location do you have it on the side of the road as well as online? And what Is your asking price?

If the pontoon actually floats and is in usable condition, and the engine as well, I would hold out for a sale. Scrapping it is not as profitable as you may think. By the way, this is absolutely the worst time of the year to be selling boats. If you could hold off until next spring, it would be seen by more people looking for a boat to get on the water. JMHO

I do realize that but I don't have the space to store it all winter.

Lower units sell for more than that on ebay.

Yep.
Thats the way it is.

Try putting a transmission in a 1996 s-Blazer. It will cost you more than you can sell the Blazer for when you're done.

People just don't want those older motors, with no power trim, and the parts/service issues.

I'll let my 20' Crest with Mariner 40 go for $1500.
I'd like it gone before I have to start raking leaves out of it!
