How can I tell if my lower unit seals are bad?

I have a 1988 Force 50hp outboard on my boat and I was wondering how I could easily tell if the seals are shot.Also, if water somehow gets past the seals into the lower unit, what's the best way to clean it?

if your lower unit fluid looks milky chances are you need new seals
this means water is getting into your lower unit.
