I just bought a motor from a guy and I don't believe what the serial # says this motor is. It looks like the clamp has been replaced and the serial# went with it. The serial# says montgomery ward model: GG9021A S#:65x615195 which makes it a 56' 12-horse. I dont believe it's right becuase the engine is big for a 12...and the prop is big(about an inch bigger than my force 15's "speed prop"), also it does not look like a 56' it's got a poly square looking engine cover like a late late 60s or early 70's. My guess is 18 to 25 horse is there some other place I can look for serial #'s, like power head or something? Thanks guys.

Re: How can I tell what engine I have?

GG9021A is a 1956 Gale built 12hp outboard. Gale was one of OMC's divisions, along with Johnson and Evinrude. They made engines that were relabled and sold by their customers - Goodyear, Mongomery Wards, Eatons, etc. Those were metal cowled engines so clearly they didn't transfer the plate. Check the engine block for a convex silver disc about the size of a quarter near the back of the engine. Any numbers on it?
I think the transom clamp from a 12 would fit a '60s era 18/20/25hp. The fiberglas tops came out in '59.
Any hope of a picture?
