The 1990 lower unit was made in three versions: A, B, and C. However, all used the same size water pump impeller. It sounds like you have an earlier lower unit with the smaller (in height) impeller.

A photo of your lower unit would help.

F4305 seal
F69430 seal
F694305seal
F694961 retainer
There are 3 seals in the drive you have for your motor. The question is, is the drive original?
The first drive made for that year uses a different seal than the later models.
Yours if right uses the parts I listed.
Look on your drive and find any #s or codes.Take pics and show the drive and numbers and letters..
Is it leaking at the seals?? If not? Don't mess with it.

One piece drive shaft is earlier than 1989 and has the Force water pump. The later two piece drive shaft lower units used a Mercury water pump and the impeller, while the same diameter, was about 1/8 to 1/4 inch higher

You'll need to resize the pics to post.
