most likly not very.
a good overheat will burn off the paint and blow holes in the boots then the steam and exhaust can get a tad bit thick but usually the engine blows a gasket and dies before it lights on fire.

Wrong forum..... moving to "Stupid Human Tricks" :p

And to think my first time out after re-power, I was nervous to go beyond the 2200-2300 it took to get on plane.
:D

No water in the manifolds and things get hot quick. Should be a simple fix when find out where the water is going. The first thing I would do if I was you would be to get a manual so you can understand how a marine cooling system works.

Did the mechanic not test the boat out before releasing it to the customer?
Sounds like that may be the shortest lived re-power on the planet, unless he is really lucky!
As others said you were not really close to blowing up, but, if the rubber exhaust hoses totally burnt up, and the boat sat low in the rear, and you got hit by a following wave, you could have gotten water up the ex and in the boat.
I'd stay the hell away from that skipper!

Probably! :D

At least your motor has some time on it... Mine had only about an hour on the rebuild.

My first out last year hit a Jellyfish or something , and about a 1/4 mile from the dock....something didn't seem right, and when I looked and saw the temp gauge pegged......DAMN, I hate the "sinking" feeling ya get. Survived, and live with one eye on that gauge now

Re: how close to blowing up was this

My buddy lost one to an ice bag around the lower unit blocking the water pick up.

My experience with a similar problem was a cracked manifold and cracked head. Another time I was EXTREMELY FORTUNATE with a NEW re-power..broke power steering belt/water pump belt and ran hot...seized up...let cool, got belt on good enough to get back and she's still running today with NO repairs other than replacing belt.

Re: how close to blowing up was this

God if i could only repower to a volvo IPS... since the prop/water pickup design is backwards the prop will usually eat up a ice bag or a jellyfish or anything else before it gets the chance to block the water pickup...

But if im spending that kinda money, might as well just get a fresh water cooled motor :)
