One Summer in the late '40s my Dad took me to the Polo Grounds to see my hero, Mel Ott, and his New York Giants play the Brooklyn Dodgers.

My Dad was one of those walking encyclopedia types. Asking him a simple question was like trying to take a sip from a fire hydrant. I thought he knew EVERYTHING and could explain it in detail.

I asked him a simple question that he couldn't answer.

Why is the guy in charge of a baseball team a Manager, but the guy in charge of a football team is a Coach?

Because baseball players are more cerebral than football players. You have to manage them. Football players you can just tell what to do and hope the understand enough to do it. (Hey, I was a lineman, I ought to know! Coach always had the team line up at the edge of a patch ofwoods and have us race through it. The ones that ran around the trees where the backs and wide recievers. Those of us that ran into the trees were the lineman!

Oh contraire aspeck.

Its because the baseball players are a bunch of emotional crybabies who have to be managed, lest we hurt their feelings.

While the football players are real men, who can take a little prodding and or criticizism.

(stricly speaking of the "pros")

manager has more than one syllable, football players would have a hard time with it.

Umm, ah, errr, 1? 2? 3? or 4? ummm, ok, uh no, errr, ok.

Uh ohh, here comes the ma ma ma manager, he's tapping his right arm. He's sending me home for 4 days to get my head right. Re: How come. . . ?

Okay, let me rephrase my post. Because baseball players THINK they are more cerebral! There, how is that. 'Course, by the time they get to the pros they are all over paid cry babies, but that is for a different thread.

simply reflects the current changes in language.
if football went back as far, they would surely
be called managers also IMO.
