Did you strip the splines in the coupler? If so, that it very unusual in the later OMC units as the are much larger and beefier splines than in the earlier electric shift units.

To get the coupler off, I would take a sharp 1/2" wide chisel and carefully hit it between the flywheel and the coupler, moving it around the circle as you tap on it. It should pop right off. There is nothing else holding it on after you remove the bolts.

If you have all the nuts off that are holding the coupler. It should fall off. Tap it a little harder.Jerry

Triangular or round type?
Once all the bolts/nuts are removed it just pops off.

Re: How do i break loose the coupler from the flywheel?

Thanks all. Just what i thought should fall right off.

I'll just keep tapping it must be rust.

If you look at my last post you'll see what happened.

Yea very, very, unusual for the coupler to strip.

Thought it was the water pump shaft after i calmed down enough to think.

When i turned the prop in gear on the trailer motor off both ball gears and the shaft turned.

I just could not believe my eyes. I kept turning the prop and watching the gears for a hour.

Also i have all the spare parts to fix a water pump shaft problem but not a coupler.

Theres a guy near me has all kinds of used ones. 300-400 new all over the web. None on ebay but a 300 used one. 90 bucks local guy used.

The one i have is round, stringer no rubber.

Thanks again guys getting old and needed to know that it should have fell right off.

Believe me got em all. Was the easiest thing today. Just used my compressor and gun.

I'm gonna shoot it tomorrow with some pb and let it sit while i cut the grass tomorrow.

After that it's coming off tomorrow one way or the other.

And i'm taking it with me with the shaft to match up the replacement.

Have 2 other shafts from the ball gear back with the bearings and everything.

To me didn't look all that bad and would have maybe used it, the original.

But had almost brand new ball gear on shaft and splines are perfect, bearing perfect. So im going to use it one of the spares.

No splines left on the coupler.

Got it off ok after shooting it with pb and let it sit. Taping it taping it till it came off the flywheel also.

Waiting for the coupler coming from colorado. Fresh water used we will see.

Warrantied the shipping and the coupler. Maybe there is some honest people left besides me.

I need a coupler for a small crankshaft end bolt pattern. Do you think your coupler supplier would have one. Changed out the engine and old coupler would not fit(too big).

Do we even have a clue as to what you need it for?

Wizeone you took the words right out of my mouth. Yea he should have one.

Guy in freehold had one 90 bucks used. Almost sure saltwater used didn't want it.

He has a bunch.

Guy in colorado all used but freshwater. 35 bucks delivered. E-bay.

I would have ordered it thru this web site but; 4 kids house, cars, I'm not a rich man.

Just received the the parts to do the timing belt on my wifes elantra. Do all the work myself. 93 bucks vs the dealer 700 bucks. Do my own oil changes on the cars.

All to save MONEY.

Motor went in easy as pie. Missing one bolt can't believe it. Bet i find it in the boat down the road .

Friend says he has one.

Tomorrow everything gets put back together. Alternator, wires, throttle cable, etc.

Hope you greeezed the snot out of the driveshaft and coupler. It is usually corrorsion/rust that eats away at the splines. The oring is there to help hold the greeeeeeeeze inside the coupler.
