Thanks for looking....

A few months ago I picked up a boat with a 1996 Johnson 115 V4, and since I don't know when/if the impeller was changed, I would like to change it to avoid any future problems.

I've never changed an impeller, therefore I'm looking for some instructions or better yet a video on how to do the job myself. I'd also like to know what the common mistakes are, pitfalls, etc., when doing this job.

Based on what I've read in the iBoats forums, impellers are quite the important thing to keep well maintained to avoid big money repairs in the future!

First you need to remove the gearcase:

1. Disconnect the shift rod by pulling the clip and shoving the shift lever towards the port side. This is located at the lower front edge of the intake manifold, below the carburetors;

2. Remove a total of seven bolts: two on each side, one in the center, one holding the trim tab, and one partly hidden above the trim tab. There is another bolt holding the anode which you may want to service at this time.

Be sure to mark the position of the trim tab before removal so that you can put it back as it was.

Try not to turn the shift rod while servicing.

Fully agree have just done mine, make sure you push that shaft as far as it will go to port and then maybe pull down gently with long nose pliers. Once the leg is off do not move or twist the shift rod. Handy home hint on reassembly it makes a world of difference if you have someone operate the helm to line the rod back up. My wife helped me for the first time and it went in first go easy as. These guys talked me thru it and with out them I would have taken to it with a hammer lol. You need any hints PM me. Cheers PS if you have a Seloc manual, use it to light the BBQ!!!!!

Thanks for the detailed advice and hints, however, based on me being a complete idiot and novice when it comes to outboards, I may have to 'youtube it' to get the job done. I have no idea what the parts are that you are referring to, so I may need to use your advice coupled with photos and videos to help me along.

...but, if I start and I can't identify things, I may bite the bullet and get it professionally done. I don't wanna risk any damage. Or even better, I may search for someone who I can watch do it this year, so I can do the job in a couple of years myself.

Again, thanks for all the advice and direction.

You cant really get into too much trouble doing this, believe me it's not as hard as it looks. Just roll up your sleeves and hook into it, and if you get stuck we will try and walk you thru it. Step one have someone sit at the helm, and move the shifter back and forward, whilst you look at your motor from the rear staboard side. You will see the rod that we are referring to moving make and forward, and there is a d shaped clip going thru that rod. Remove that clip with long nose pliers, then wedge a screw driver at the end of the rod and push all the way to port. Jump on when you get that far and good luck.

This is really just a two-step process. 1) buy a service manual specific to your engine. It contains detailed step-by-step procedures and pictures. 2) If you have trouble come back here. If you don't know what the parts are, we can't really be of much help. The manual is your friend in this case.

Get the repair manual through West marine. You will be happy you did it your self. And the money saved alone is worth it. Just pay attention of impeller fin direction. fins have to cup into housing with proper direction of drive shaft. You can do it!
