Re: How do I change the oil in the lower unit?

There are 2 plugs with gaskets (plastic washers).

With the motor upright remove both plugs and the oil will pour out.

Fill the gearcase from the lower (yes lower) hole until oil comes out of top hole. Replace lower plug (quickly) and replace the upper plug. (or you could install the upper plug first which will slow down the oil then the lower plug).

I strongly recommend you purchase the following:

A good size screwdriver or tip that fits the entire slot in the plugs.

Purchase a quart (don't bother with the small tubes) of lower unit oil (available at NAPA)
DO NOT USE ANY OLD GEAR OIL use lower unit oil.

Purchase a pump for the oil. The pumps are made to screw into the lower unit and they are the best way to go (my opinion :) ). You will be doing this proceedure again so you will be saving $$$.

When the plugs are removed look for evidence of metal shavings a small bit is common for new motors but a large amount is trouble. If the old oil is milky don't panic, change it and check it again after your next outing. You might have a seal leaking.

Yeah, buy the book ;)

Bob
