I have a '74 Mercury inline 6 150HP outboard. I would like to check the oil in the lower unit, make sure there is enough and it's the right color. How do I go about doing this?

Go and buy 2 brightly coloured replacement washers for your motor (Easy to see)
;) Remove top vent screw. If oil runs out, it's full.
But it probably won't run out. So, get a small squeeze bottle, and fill it to the very top (no air)with marine L/U oil. Undo bottom fill screw and insert the pointy end of bottle .. squeeze oil in intil it runs out of vent hole. wait til bubbles stop.. Replace top screw (with new washer) and then bottom one (with other new washer).
To replace the oil.. just let it all drain and use a bigger bottle or a pump to add the oil.
