Boat was kept in the water for a couple of months before we moved to the new house with a lift. The bottom was painted (by previous owner), but he didn't pain the transom. I hade the bottom cleaned monthly, but this is what is still stuck on the transom, as well as the outdrive:

How do I get that white residue from the removed barnacles off? Paint scraper really didn't do much, as it's fairly smooth.

Ayuh,... I believe it's mostly calcium, so CLR is what I'd start with....

Yup, CLR or even try some vinegar straight and a bit of elbow grease.

Ok, CLR it is. Do I use a sponge, scrubby, magic eraser, or what? At least now I know what I'll be doing next weekend.

CLR works but it takes a long time, Starbrite makes a barnical remover but be careful it is powerfull stuff, muratic acid works also but once again, very powerfull stuff:eek:

Oxalic acid is also good for this. Any number of cleaning products contain it as the primary active ingredient, including toilet bowl cleaners and Home Depot rust remover gel. Read the product label. Can be easier to find than muriatic depending on local EPA regs. With either, use, skin/eye protection and lots of water for flushing.

Picked up some CLR last night, and that will be this afternoon's project. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ok, so I used some straight CLR on a scrubby sponge, let it soak for a few minutes, then tried to scrub it off. Didn't really do much.

So I then opened up a big can of elbow grease and a metal scraper, and here is the result:

Much better! I think the soaking with the CLR helped.

Wow, that elbow grease looks like some pretty good stuff! I might have to use a tube of that on my trailer. Well done B.

I got a white gelcoated glass boat and had black rubber tire marks from my buddies dock on it. The comet powder stuff on a wet rag cleaned it right up....even cleaned rust marks off from the interior floor where my anchor chain was sitting....of course with a sufficient supply of elbow grease !!!

All this time I thought sandpaper was the only way to get off Barnicles ( curse them ).

I also have (had now) some rust stains from where the previous owner used non SS screws/bolts on different things. I found a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (regular strength) cleaned it up quickly with minimal effort. I was always hesitant to get a magic eraser, and when I finally did, I was totally amazed. And it doesn't scratch the gelcoat!

Mind if I borrow YOUR elbow grease for my trailer?

Re: How do I clean this?

Here in Louisiana we have something called "alumibright" It is acidic. It will turn aluminum WHITE as the driven snow if left on more than a few second at full strength. I always cut it 10% acid to 90% water and scrub away. On the bottle is says good for cleaning fiberglass. I used it several weeks ago to remove some rust and brown spots and it's clean as a whistle and has done no damage to the fiberglass. As far as Barnicle cleaning...I dunno. I think the stuff I'm using is kin to "wipe on-wipe off" which is a product a friend told me to use. Thats what you do with it. Wipe it on then wipe it off. Just my 2 cents.
