Hey guys i just changed my 2000 50hp evinrude from a vro to a premix.it seems to be getting to much oil.I can clear it out at higher speeds but it wont idle. At idle it well start puffing blue smoke, running rough & cut off& will not restart till you put throttle all the way high.I mixed the fuel at 50to1.does that sound right or should i add less oil? Also,on the air/fuel mixture any one have an idea how many turns should they be turned out? Any help would be great.thank you

Ross start it and let it warm to operating temp. While at the dock and tied up and in forward gear at idle, adjust low idle jet in to lean up engine(clockwise). When you notice motor starting to spit cough sputter or die, back out 1/4 turn or in till it runs its smoothest. Someone will probably tell you different and it will be up to you on how you do it! Post back and let us know what happens. Note can be done on muffs, but may have to tweak it a little when you get to the lake. Yes 50:1 fuel mix.

Is the mtr coming up to proper temp at idle? If these mtrs run cold at idle they won't idle worth a darn. If you can hold your knukles on top of the block by the cyl head for more than 10 seconds they are running to cold.

Did you slosh the tank around a bit before trying to start it up?
If you poured the oil in on top of the fuel the oil will go straight to the bottom of the tank.
It will mix very easily, a short trip to the ramp will do it.
I believe part of the tcw3 specs say it must be fully mixed after 9 or 10 inversions.

My 140HP is smokier at first start up and idle after I went to pre-mix as it is getting 50 to 1 constantly now. get a bit of a cloud at initial start up but clears in about 10 seconds.
Are you sure you mixed at 50 to 1 ???

If you eliminated the VRO and are pre-mixing then it is not getting too much oil. There is no magic setting for the idle mixture screws. Turn them in until the engine gags, note the setting, then back it out until it gags. Happiness is somewhere in between. After each adjustment you may need to adjust the IDLE SPEED. Do all of this in the water. As mentioned, if the thermostat is not working properly fix it first.

Monte thanks for getting back so soon.My problem is that i cant slow motor down to put in gear.when i do it cuts off. What i was talking about with the jet srews is like when i rebuild a carb. i back out srew about 1 and a half turns to start.Does that sound right for this motor?Oh I do remember one more think.I did use some outboard motor oil that iv had for a year or two.

Hey boobie thanks for helping again. As for as if its getting warm.IT gets pretty hot.The motor been sitting about a year & the carb.where full of oil.I drained them & shot a little carb cleaner in drain holes of carbs. When you try & idle it down starts to miss & blue smoke comes out the exhaust. Also i was telling monte i had used some old oil.

Kenmyfam thank you for answering me.I put a half pint of oil to 3 gal of gas.If i run the motor wide open it will clear but as soon as i try to drop the speed it starts to spit & miss.Blue smoke starts to come out the exhaust & it cuts off.If you canthank of anything else please let me know.thanks

Thankyou silvertip for replying. When i pulled the drain plugs from the carbs they where full of oil.I have to wonder if the block was too.I dont know that much about a outboard.i was a auto mech.I do know when you build a carb.you start out with the srewsout a turn or two.would that be the same with these carbs? Also at this time i can not get the motor to idle to adjust fuel mixture.so if you can think of anything please let my know .thanks again

thanks for asking fred but i put the oil in a 6 gal. tank & then runthe gas in it.then i shake the tank. But i did use old oil.what do you thank?

Re: how do i fix my evinrude

When you converted to premix, you removed the oil line to the OMS pump and plugged it? Just curious, why did you convert to premix?

BTW 50::1 is correct mix. Also, OMS pump mixed gas and oil before pumping mixed fuel to carbs. You should not need to adjust anything if motor ran OK with OMS set up.

Re: how do i fix my evinrude

Chris1956,I changed it to a premix because the fuel pump had gone bad & I had done the same change over on a different boat a few years ago & it had worked fine. Now the reason i was asking about the air/fuel mix is that when the motor started running rough & before the pump went completely out i thought it could have been in the carbs & rebuilt them. Now the motor sat all last year & when I did the change over I pulled the two drain plugs on the carbs & they where full of oil.Do you think there is anwhere else in the motor that could be holding oil?thanks for your help

Re: how do i fix my evinrude

The OMS pump will pump extra oil, if the fuel side has an air leak. Perhaps you had such a leak, or the defectiveness of the OMS pump allowed it to pump more oil.

Did you ever consider rebuilding the OMS Pump? I have been told that there are Gasoline-side repair parts availible for it.

You might check the fuel recrculation system for residual oil. I would think it would burn off eventually, but it may affect the idle quality.

Chris thanks for answering.the reason i did what i did was the part guy told my i would be back again in a year or two to get another kit. He said the gas today eats them up.
