How do I get all the oil out?

I have a 1994 OMC(Volvo) 5.0FL engine on my boat. When I bought it, it came with the brass "plunger" hand pump that screws onto the dipstick tube to get the oil out.

However, when using this pump, a good amount of oil remains in the sump. What am I missing with this hand pump, and how do I get all the oil out?

Thanks,
34S.

They sell an electric pump that you can pick up from Bass pro for around $20. It has a tube you feed down the dip stick into the oil pan and it gets all the oil out.

I used to have to do this, but I added a drain tube to my engine by building my own custom elbow for the dip stick.

There is a link in my signature for my 3.7L rebuild that explains how i did it. If you have room to get to the elbow you could do a similar set up for your self once you get all your oil out.

Without pulling the plug you won't get all the oil out. You can attach a hose where the plug goes in and suck the oil from there. It makes a big mess the first time, then you just cap the hose and leave it in your bilge.... that is if you can get to the plug. Just pump out all you can and chane the oil filter. It gets most of it and dilutes the rest.
