OK, you Mercury experts, my cousin brought me a Mercury 4.5hp that has no model number but s/n 4759037 & appears to be made between 1980-1985. It won't start after setting for 15 years.
I intended to take the carbruetor off & soak it cleaner as a start. However the plastic choke is blocking any forward movement enough to not allow the carb to move forward off the studs in the manifold. I can not see how to take the choke apart without possibly breaking it. The carb mounting flange has the RH side hole elongated downward (facing forward), but does no good as tipping it that way, the RH side of the carb is stopped by the metal pan boss that the top cowling rubber drops into.
It appears that the powerhead was bolted onto the exhaust housing/lower pan after the choke was installed??? If so with all the rusted bolts protruding downward at the exhaust housing, I hate to twist any off just to remove the carb.
My first attemp to wrench on a Merc in 40 years. Maybe I am just OMC-ized.
