My thompson calais 1993 mercruiser will not start. I thought the plugs might be fouled so I was going to change them but they are right under the exhaust manifold. Is there an easy way to change them or will I have to have it done?

Hi,

There is a special tool for it, helps you reach tight angle's... cant remember right now what it is called. You can get it from any merc dealer or West Marine...

You put a couple of throw rugs on top of engine - lay on them - 3/8 ratchet,- long extension - 5/8 plug socket - and go after them.
Or pay a mechanic $120 to change them, and then
tell you, thats not the problem.

Mich, I have a 4.3L V6 (2/3 of a 305/350 CI Chevy). The plugs are hard to see, since they are under the exhaust manifold. If you lay next to the motor you will be able to see the plugs. if there is no room to lay down, you can trace the plug wires to the plugs. I use a 3/8 socket wrench with a standard extension and a 5/8" socket. Not a problem since I have two feet clearance on each side of the motor.

I haven't SEEN a plug on a V6 or V8 for years.Been doing them by feel, one wire, one plug at a time.A 12 inch lenght of 5/16 or 3/8 fuel hose is a good aid both in and out.
DHP
I lied, changed a V6 plugs last week and could seem them.Oh yeah the motor was out and on the floor.
