I have a 1996 Johnson Fast Strike 150. The engine model is BJ150GLEUE.

I just got the engine. It's still brand new as the previous owner bought it brand new and never used it.

Is there a way to check if this model already has "QuickStart" feature?

There is a print when you open the cover that says " OIS 2000 - Optimal Ignition System". Could this be it?

Thanks!

Your engine has the QuickStart feature, OIS stands for Optical Ignition System. This system has to many features to try to discribe here. Hopefully you got the owners manual, but you will also want a service manual.

Thanks for the very fast reply! Really appreciate it. I have the OPERATION and MAINTENANCE MANUAL it's 37 pages. Hope this is the one.

Can anyone recommend where to get a SERVICE MANUAL? Is SELOC a good manual?

I also want to add a temperature guage but when I was reading the manual it said something about a WATER PRESSURE port on the head where I could attach a guage. What should I get? A temp guage or water pressure guage? What PSI should be be looking at for a Water Pressure guage?

Thank you very much!

Francis

What you have is the owners manual. With this engine, I would go with the OEM manual because of the OIS ignition. To adjust this system properly you need a insturment called an Ignition Analyser sold by OMC. I don't know if an after market manual would go into that. You can hook up both a water pressure guage, or a temp. guage. The pressure guage will read about 30 Lbs. at wide open throttle.

A temp gauge tells you what already happened and a pressure gauge will tell you whats going to happen based on whats happening now.

As R. says, you can use both. There is also a waring horn just in case youre watching something else instead of the gauges.

BTW -- an "EU" is a 1997 model. Congrats!

Thanks so much guys! I love this forum! By the way. How do I decode or interpret my Engine model number? It's interesting that "Dhadley"
said it's a 97 based on the "EU" as there was a stamp near the model number "1996".

Also who knows where I can get the "Ignition Analyser sold by OMC".

By the way - I am looking at Teleflex Guages for my Water Pressure and temp. Is there a way to post pictures here? I wanted to post my boat.

Thanks again!

The expensive factory analyser only tests the infrared electric eye and can set the timing without running the motor. A new electric eye only costs about $55.

You still need a peak reading voltmeter or a digital meter with an adapter to test the rest of the system, along with an adjustable spark checker and the correct service manual.
