How do I know if my carb butterfly valve is full open

I have a 2004 TLRD 60. I tuned my engine per the service manual, but when my throttle is WOT, it seems like the carb linkage only moves a very slight amount. I could still open my carbs more by hand, but isn't that overriding the linkage? The cam that moves the carb valve is only about mid way, and still has some length on it to open the carb more, but the magneto/spark timing is all the way advanced. My idle seems fine and my WOT RPM is at 5000. Any advice??

Not sure what you mean by "I tuned my engine per the service manual", what did you do?

Also not sure what you mean by"the magneto/spark timing" as the timing is controlled by the CDI on these newer motors electronically, but you do set the idle stop and WOT timing stop while doing the link and sync adjustments.

Sounds like you have not adjusted the control linkage properly or the link and sync is messed up. Did it ever run properly

The engine runs fine. For 'link and sync' there are two control arms that I adjusted to the specifications in the user manual (really not much of an adjustment, 1/2 to one turn of the arm), and then I adjusted the timing stops for idle and WOT. With my old Johnson engine, at WOT, the butterfly valve roated 90 degrees which makes sense. But, on this engine, at WOT, it seems like the butterfly valve only rotates 30 to 45 degrees. I can't see the insides of the carb, so I can't see the butterfly valve, but from the outside, the valve only seems to rotate 30 to 45 degrees.

I'm just trying to get a basic feeling for my engine. If I could get more performance, I'd like to. The tachometer on my dash seems to be a little high also, (7500 RPM at WOT and 3000 RPM at idle, but it doesn't sound like 3000 RPM). I guess I'll break down and buy an inductive tach and see what is going on.

1st you say idle seems fine and my WOT RPM is at 5000
then you say 7500 RPM at WOT and 3000 RPM at idle, but it doesn't sound like 3000 RPM

You have some major problems with at least the tach and maybe others as it should idle less than 1000

fix the tach so you know what your motor is doing then post some real numbers
