I am needing to replace ignition coil and while I am at it replace points, condensor, rotor and cap. I have seen several descriptions of parts on web sites. How do I know what to order? Are there numbers on my existing components?

1982 OMC 2.5 liter in-line 4 cyl.

Try checking these guys. They're not the cheapest on the web, but they have good illustrated parts lists for most all OMC's. Go2Marine.com has very good prices and excellent delivery times (regular shipping: 3 days from Washington state to Maine)
Doug Russell Marine

Does my ignition coil need to be a marine coil? What makes it marine grade?

i have replaced my ignition coil, spark plug wires, condensor, points, and plugs with automotive parts. the distributor cap and rotor button were different and came from the merc dealer. one problem with the auto parts is what to tell the counter clerk what year and application you have. possibly take the parts with you to the auto store, my Advance guy cannot look up boat parts. carburator(sic) parts are merc items.

Hoot, I can't remember if you posted it or not. What engine do you have? Was wondering if it is the same as mine. I went and took the coil off and it has a name like "ECHLIN" and the number "IC-10. The only thing I could find on the distributor was on the plate under the points and condensor. "Delco" was stamped on it. Could I assume that everything is delco since the motor has "GM" stamped on it? I noticed that when I took the oil cap off to put in some oil.

Think I found it. Done some cross referencing. The existing coil "echlin ic10" matched up with oem part "omc 383444". Found that on an OMC parts website. The "echlin" is a NAPA part. I then went to autozone and cross referenced and found a "wells c819" for 10 bucks.
