I bought a Merc fuel line at walmart for my 1972 merc 115 Inline 6 and of course it doesn't fit. Can I just make a connector to connect the fuel line to the motor? If so, what do I need? Thanks.

Billy

Billy,
I think Merc uses some different fittings over the years, and also depending on the size of the outboard.
For example (I 'm posting this picture off Cabelas site)

I think your fitting looks like this one

which came from our friends right here at iboats.

Just click on Marine Mega Mall at the top of the screen, and search for Mercury Fuel Fittings

Ed,

The one I bought from walmart looks like that one, but it seems not to be deep enough inside the fitting to connect. Is there a difference?

My connector looks very similar to the one in the picture. It's a push and turn process, so maybe you're missing part of that.

I'm not an expert, so I really can't comment on whether or not there's a difference. You might want to look over at Merc's site, plugging-in your S/N, to see if there's any info (they've got some VERY nice exploded views).

Should be able to just push it in a twist 90 degrees. I've used the Schlock-mart fittings b4. Good Luck.

The inlet on the motor has a small spring loaded spike sticking out. Your female fitting has a ball bearing and rubber seal about 15mm inside. Push it on hard and turn it clockwise and anti clockwise until it goes in another 10-15mm and then turn it back until locked. I'm sure you have the right fitting. Merc ones are all the same.
IMF .. Sounds like you are gonna need a lot of advice from the guys on here.. which is really good because that's why we all come here.. to teach and learn.. ;)

Well I had to really push on it and turn it to lock it with the help of some channel locks. I have to get a couple of fittings for the temporary tank before I can fire it up. Thanks for the help guys.

Unicorn, your right I'm going to need a lot of help from this site.
By the way, why don't you send some of those fine looking Australian blondes to New Orleans for Mardi Gras! I would love to show them a good time! :D But don't tell my wife

If it was mine, I'd remove the disconnect and run the hose directly to the fuel pump. I personally feel like there's to much restriction through it. I'd also install a good filter/water separator in the line.

c/6
Hooty
