I looked at my 1889 200 Merc engine sr#OC139752 this afternoon. I just could not figure out how to unbolt and lower the the lower cowing giving better access to the poppet valve. My lower cowling (1/2s) are connected to 4 large motor mounts and no nuts (pins) to remove them. I looked at one Merc manual, but cannot find one for my engine, it was not the same as my engine, the one I saw for a 135-150-175-200 Merc. I think the poppet valve could be changed w/o dropping the cowlng but would really be easier if that could happen. Any help would be appreciated.

There should be 5 bolts going throught the side of the lower pan 2 near the back - three near the front under the pan.

Use your ser# and check www.mercurypartsexpress.com and you will see the parts breakdown very simple to open up to get to the poppet valve.

The bolts are not shown for your ser# or mine -- They are there on mine, I've had them off.

By the way - you are looking on ther outside of the pan, right? -had to ask to be sure.

OK, I just went and looked, I take you are talking about the 5/16"-1/4" caps screw heads? I see 3 of them on the outside, one in the back, one under the front latch and one but the steering arm. I guess when I get into it I will find the other 2.
I would have thought they would have been larger than that.
I've got a transducer mounting plate and 2 trandsucers w/speed wheels to get installed first.

Re: How do I remove lower cowling on 1989 200hp Merc

Well, I had time on my hands and tried again to get the lower cowling to drop down.. I found 4 small cap type screws/bolts and took them out but I still could not get the lowers halves to seperate. I had small gap in the back, but still holding pretty solid. What am I missing?
One more month and fishing opens back up for a few months, I would like to take a look at the poppet valve while I have time.

I'm no expert.......but I own 89' 200 like yours and have had that off recently. Your wording "to drop down" leads me to belive you are trying to lower the cowling off the power head which won't work. With the small screws removed you seperate the halves horizontally so they will slide off the 2 per side rubber grommets. Maybe those rubber grommets need a little lube to break free from their mounting shafts.

OK, thanks. Do you take any other parts off cowling to get it to come out enough to access the poppet valve area?
I was afraid to pull too hard on it.

No, just the small screws if I remember right. Also disconnect the cowl mounted tilt/trim switch wires )if you have that) or the switch itself......can't remembwer which.
