How do I remove piston pin?

Ok, I've got my '86 Johnson 40 Horse completely disassembled. I need to remove the old pistons, replace the loose needle bearings, and then attach the new oversize pistons. Without buying the special OMC Tool used to remove the piston pin, what is the best way to take that pin out? I have both retaining ring/clips off, and used a screwdriver to try to drive the pin out, but only moved it about a 1/4". Thanks in advance. Tink

Pin may have a taper on one end and only come out one way.

Tink.....look on the inside and see if either side of the piston is marked with an "L". Don't think either side is but the "L" is the lose end. A metal dowel will sub for the special tool. Brass would be even better. The pins should tap out using a drift pin. If not, look for someone with a manual press.

By the by.....do ya' got a manual? We've said it a thousand times before, if yer going to get into a rebuild, get the manual, preferably OEM. The OEM will tell you what to do.

Keep us posted tink....thanks.

Yeah, I've got the Clymer Manual. It says to use Tool #blah blah blah that is specially made to remove the piston pin. Then it shows really nice photos of them using that tool to remove the pin. It says nothing of what to do if you don't want to spend a crapload on a tool you're only going to use two times. I know what you mean about looking for the loose side, but I am pretty sure the manual said that was only on Johnson 40's made earlier than mine. I don't think mine is marked, but I'll double check. Thanks. Tink

On those OMC pistons both sides of the wrist pin bosses are "slip fit". You can use almost anything to tap them out. And back in again.

Hey Tink
I just been where you are now on my 120. I found that an old socket and extention worked for me. and a couple of 2x4s to support the piston.
Good luck
Hooked

Ok, thanks guys, I got them out today. It was easier than I thought. I just used a flat chisel and they came right out with a hammer. Piece of cake. Thanks again. Tink
