I talked to my local mechanic and he said if I only have one cylinder firing to start at the points and work my way to the plugs. Well plugs are new....so. I got new points(inexpensive so why not) and I need to know how I go about setting them to .002 or whatever the flywheel says. I know I should get a repair manual but can one of you please just walk me through this? Shurely this is one of those ABC type of things. Thanks a million, since I got my "mushroom" this forum has been a complete life saver and has made this engine fun and interesting.

Sure, promise to pick up a manual though.

You're going to need a couple slightly obscure tools for the task. One is a torque wrench (ft/lb reading for this job) and a flywheel puller. A cheap and easily found subsitute for the flywheel puller is a 'harmonic balancer puller' from an auto tool supply. You'll need 3 1/4"-20tpi Grade 5 or better bolts 3 or 4" long to go with it. A hammer does not replace the proper puller.

Remove the flywheel nut. Install the puller to act on the three bolt holes in the flywheel. Torque up the puller and pop the flywheel off. Remove the points, install new ones, grease the cam or install a fresh wick, set up the points to open .020" maximum.
Now at this point, have a look at your ignition coils. Any cracks? If so, don't expect sparks to return.
Put the flywheel back on, finger tight the nut and with the plugs out giver a spark test. Good spark then torque the flywheel nut to 43ft/lbs.
9 times out of ten the coils are bad. The older and some of the newer ones had faults where the insulation would crack with age letting moisture in and sparks out. Good thing is it's easy enough to diagnose since you can see them. Better than blindly replacing parts.
The condensors (also under there) rarely fail. Swap them while your at it and if the dead cylinder changes with them, you know one is bad.

If you don't want to buy a manual, you can often borrow one from your local library.

Woody,

I did a couple ignitions on my http://www.outboard-boat-motor-repair.com The magnedo ignition systems were basically the same on all the small OMC motors throught the 50's and 60's. You might want to take a look at the pictures there and see what Paul means by bad coils. Tuning up that ignition will make a huge difference in the way that motor runs. The coils, and ignition tune up kits are the same Sierra part numbers for your 9.5 as they are for my 5.5 and 3 HP motors. This is an easy project that you can do yourself, so go for it.

I got the ignition rebuilt and found through all this that my spark plug wire was shot. Well, better to have all new stuff under the hood while in the middle of the lake I say. I will be getting that plug wire and boot assy. tomorrow. Guess Ill go ahead and change both of those too. So now I have gas and fire...I should have both of my cylinders back, if only I could find a starter for that thing. Mine is busted and I feel like a dope at the dock pulling without the cowling. If anyone wants to sell one just let me know. Thanks...-woody74

Woody,

A starter should be easy enough to find. I see them from time to time on eBay and also you can find these at your local boat salvage yard. The nice thing aout your motor is that it has a lot of common parts with other motors in that size and age range.

Wayne, I kinda need the whole starter, you see its like this....I was windin, then I was pullin, then I was neither windin nor pullin. I snapped the recoil spring and the rod that guides it in the middle so basically the internals are in two parts. Thanks Tom I saw a starter on ebay and bid and lost and now the same one(actually the same exact one) is on ebay again by the same seller. I emailed him and he said that a Canadian did not want to pay international s/h and so now it was up for bid again. Now you see, here is where it gets fuzzy, I looked at his feedbacks on ebay and he had a positive transaction with the guy who outbid me on that same part for that part. Something just is not right there. Let me know what you guys think. His ebay name is "guns n outboards" -woody74
