I am re-detailing an '85 Bayliner Trophy and I removed all decals/waterline striping but the adhesive remains. Can I use Acetone on the fiberglass without damaging the gel-coat? I f not what are the substitutes?? Thanx All

Ahoy, Thumper.

Go to Wal-Mart and get a product called "Goof Off". Works like a charm.

Good luck. :)

Acetone should be OK as long as you do not leave a puddle of it lying on the glass. A safer substitute may be methylated spirit but you would have to experiment to see if it was indeed a solvent for the particular adhesive left behind. Styrene Monomer will definetly shift it but it will certainly damage the gel / Glass.
Whatever you use try it on somewhere safe and potentially hidden first and ensure you have adequate ventilation as all these solvents are toxic.

Lot's of good input folks. The Goop Off really got to me. I see it all the time and never put 2 and 2 together. I'll try that first and stay away from the toxic chemicals. Any other suggestions? Thanx Again.

"3M" General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner P/N 051135-08984. Used in auto body shops for decal removal on painted or plastic body panels. A little more aggressive than Goo Gone if you have a large area to do. Can find at some auto parts store and most auto body paint stores.

Good ole Rubbing Alcohol works To I've worked for a labeling company for over 20 yrs. Most of the adhesives are alcohol based. Need to rub a bit but works and no film to clean and evaporates quick.

Goo Gone. Its a citrus base cleaner.
It works better than goof off.

I agree that many cleaners will work just fine. However,Mellowyellow has safest procedure that will not damage your boats finish and is ozone safe.Have Stevie lick it off.

Thumper,

While you're at Wal Mart getting the goo gone, there is another product that works too. It's called "de-solv-it". It is also a citrus based product and it won't hurt anything.

Do not dilute it.

Here's another thought. If the adhesive is oil based, you could try vegetable oil. I had a teacher that told me of that trick a long time ago. I've never tried it myself, but it just might work. Good Luck!

James

I agree with the Goo-Gone - it really works...

I would also get a hair dryer and heat it up to soften the glue... i took my pinstriping off my old boat with a 1000 degree heat gun. just dont concentrate on an area too long - it could burn the gel coat...

I would try the goo gone or acetone will work also but, no smoking acetone is highly flammable.Another thing is don't use the adhesive remover it will damage the gelcoat and soften it works good for getting off silicone but only a little on a rag wipe it and scrape it off with a piece of hard plastic or plexiglass sharpened.
