How do I set timing?

The service manual for my 1971 Johnson 9.5 calls for the use of a special tool that mounts on the crankshaft. There are timing marks on the armature plate this tool aligns with. Is there a way to set the timing without this tool?

Absolutely. That is just a fancy way of setting the points. Just set them at .020 at their widest opening and don't worry about it. There are also a set of timing marks on the flywheel, same as the pointers on the timing tool, if you want to fool with doing it that way.
