I am familiar with how to start a mercury I/O and was wondering if starting an omc 5.0 is similar. Any info on how to start cold and warm engine? Also, how long should i hold the key in before letting go when starting?

holding in the key is an outboard thing, not an IO thing.

First turn your blower on, then turn key on, (to activate choke) pull out on the shifter this should put you in reving in neutral position, give it two full throttle pumps and leave it in a position just above idle, then hit the key, this s a carbureted motor right?

The motor is carbureted and starts up the same way a mercruiser does, but when i start the engine when its warm i dont know how long i should turn the key for. Is there a sound i should be listening for before i let go?

Listen for the motor to start.
You shouldn't hold the starter on for over 20 seconds at a time with a 30 second cool down between or you will cook your starter and associated wiring.

Watch your tack or your amp/volt gauge if you can not hear your engine. You should be able to feel the engine when it starts.

realistically if your if it doesn't start in the first 3 to 4 seconds of cranking time then there is something wrong with your engine or how your trying to start it.
