How do I tell what HP I have on a 4.3 Mercruiser

I just purchased a 1988 Regal Sebring with a 4.3 Mercruiser IB/OB and they did not have the manual anymore,
how can I find out what HP I have on the Engine

Welcome aboard this forum.
To allow the forum to help you best always post your engine and stern drive serial numbers. Mercruiser is and has been notorious for making modifications during production runs. The serial numbers help identify the grouping of your engine and stern drive.

You will want to become familiar with the "Sticky's" in the "Adult " section of this forum. You will be able to identify your engine/outdrive and find the shop manuals for each.

So post those serial numbers and you will have plenty of experienced help.

Here's a link (that is also found in the sticky section) to the service man #7 for a v6 of the year you mentioned with the link at page B4 and you can see there's only 2 choices: 185 or 205 hp.

I would hope there is some designation or sticker on your engine that might tell but also the serial number can be used to verify it for sure.

2 barrel carb- 175hp
4 barrel carb- 205hp

Look at carb, or find engine sticker.

My 86 4.3 with a 2 barrel [ mercarb] is rated 185 HP

I have a 88 4.3 with the 4 barrel carb and it's rated at 205hp. It's referred to as a 4.3LX

Most Regals of that era came with the 2 barrel carb. I can't remember ever seeing a 4 barrel option on one of the late 80s... So you most likely have a 175HP. Is your engine flame arrestor cover intact? It should be listed there.

thanks a lot for the information, I found the ID number on the Flame arrestor today and it shows OC 736031 I think you
are right,I have not checked the carburetor yet,will check tomorrow to make sure,

0C736031 is the drive serial number. It gives us the drive information (1989 Alpha One, ratio 1.84:1), but not the engine information...

It should be tagged on the engine but is probably on the FA cover as well.
