Stupid question. I just purchased a 1977 Mercury 850 outboard. I hooked a strap to some come alongs and lifted it out of my truck and on to my stand. I got it in the same way. I put the strap around the lower cowl openings. Is there a way to strap on to the engine to lift it? I want to paint it but I know i will ruin the paint by lifting with this method. How do you guys and gals get your outboard off and on a transom or stand. I have a bad back and just can't lift anymore. Well, I could, but will pay for it dearly. I took my 65 off the same way.

Also, can anyone tell me how much this 85 may weigh? I've read around 250lbs??

a) lifting ring on flywheel
b) engine hoist for car motors. Get a used one on craigslist for under $100. Makes the job easy !

Guys, thanks a bunch. I've heard of the lifting ring but didn't know exactly how it worked. Thanks for the quick replies.

TC - your weight is about right. That lift ring and flywheel puller is one of the best deals on ebay. The maker and seller stands behind his products too.
