engine feels like it's misfireing but not backfiriring. I had to turn adjustment of accel cable to keep running and I did depress interupor switch and engine doesn't change at all. I suspect the interuptor might be on all the time. How do I by pass it all together temporarily to eliminate any possability of being thae problem? long block is new but same everything else. this was a pre-existing condition prior to engine replacement. (frozen block).

The easiest way is to disconnect the wire from the switch that goes to ground right beside the switch. If you leave the switch disconnected and try to operate the boat you will cause damage to the drive. Disconnect for diagnostic purposes only.

Don't know what drive your running, but on my pre alpha 260 if I press on the interupt switch it kills the engine just like turning the key off. If nothing happens when you press it, I would think it is broken..welcome to the site by the way.....if you can give more info we have a lot of folks here that will be able to help you figure this out...

just having a brain doesn't make you smart either. I grew up on a boat. Lobsterman, waterskier, engine rebuilder. I'm just not good with electrical and I have a feeling this inturruptor could be the problem. If I forgot to list year make and model this does not make me less a boater. 87 omc cobra 5.0L. it's just like the internet that your looking for help on an issue and some a-_ole tries to say im not a boater. maybey you're not a boater sitting in front of your computer!!

The shift interrupt serves one purpose. to kill the motor momentarily so the boat will come out of gear. If it were on all the time the motor would not run at all. You can unhook the two wires going to it to "bypass" it, but your problem lies elsewhere imo. Also as already stated you can damage the drive by trying to force it out of gear. The drive is such that it wants to stay in gear under a load and not come out. So the shift interruptor

Hold on there Freddyray, the OMC cobra ESA system only cuts of some of the cylinders, not all like Merc.
Dom, just unplug the ESA module and see if the engine will run ok.

I'm more familiar with the OMC stringers but I expect the ESA wiring is similar. If so, it sounds like the small limit switch on the shift converter to sense shift resistance is stuck on, which will make the engine stumble constantly.

Dude take a chill pill!! The question was asked for the specific reason Don mentioned. Different systems function differently. The OMC cuts half the cylinders, like your experiencing. The Merc system kills the ing system completely. So IF you had a Merc you would be addressing another issue. BTW there's no need to apologize, just disconnect the esa switch and see if your problem goes away. In which case you'd most likely be looking at replacing the lower shift cable. Oh........ and have a nice day. FWIW that tag line appears on all my post.

What Don said, unplug the ESA Module, unplugging a trigger will prove fault to a defective trigger BUT if the fault is within the module then the trigger test will NOT have any effect.

Unplug the module and retest.

Re: How Do You By-pass Interuptor

Unplugging the ESA module will remove it from the circuit. Sounds to me like your ESA is not working at all. I think you have other problems that are causing the idling problems.
