Re: How do you change a prop?
Couple of other general points:
Make sure to replace the prop with one of the same diameter and pitch (assuming you aren't experimenting with different prop sizes...)
You may discover your prop nut is held in place by some kind of retainer that requires you to bend some tabs back so it will turn or a cotter pin which must be straightened and slid out of the prop shaft.
Also, don't just yank the prop off once the nut is free. Have a close look at the various washers and thrust plates that might be used both in front of and behind the prop. Take these off in order, and replace in order, noting which way they face as they go on the splined shaft.
And, since you are replacing a prop due to a strike, sight down the prop shaft to make sure it isn't bent. Give it a good tug side to side to see if there is undue play, and of course, check the rest of the gear case for cracks or leaks.
Give the shaft a thin coat of marine-grade grease prior to installing the new prop. And don't reef the nut on too hard. Firm enough to make good contact and eliminate any play.
When the new prop is on, don't forget to re-install whatever tabs or locks there were to keep the nut from backing off. If it was a cotter pin -- toss the old one and replace it.
Finally, give the prop a spin by hand (with the engine in neutral and ignition off!) to ensure there is no wobble or contact between the prob hub and gear case.
Now, get your busted prop repaired, or buy another and keep it onboard for the next time.
Happy boating!
