how do you check the timing

i have a 1978 55hp evinrude and it turns hard but starts good how do you check the timing and if its off how do you change it

Forget about trying to time the engine till you become really really mechanically proficient. And only do it with the proper manual and tools.<br /><br />Get that battery replaced so it will spin faster while cranking it should help greatly.
