I have a small tear in a 3 blade aluminum prop. Its on one blade and about 3/4 inch long. I enjoy doing my own work and would like to attempt a repair. I figure, use heat and tap it back into place. I would think mabey some plumbers solder to fill the gap and file/sand to shape. This prop is a 21 pitch and I'm going to a 19 so this prop will become a spare. In other words, this repair doesn't have to be perfect! Any suggestions? Also, I have an arc welder. Do they sell rods for welding Aluminum?

Re: How do you fix Prop?

Yes they do but you need an AC tig welder with high frequency to use them.
There are stick rods but they're very difficult to work with.
Mig is also tricky for such thin metal and leaves a rough finish.

You won't be able to just heat it and have it fuse together, aluminum oxides fast, especially with heat.

If it's strictly for a spare, hammer it flat and patch with JB or similar, sand & paint.

They sell brazing rods made for aluminum. It should work fine only as a back up prop to get you back to the dock.
