Its a J5REE, 1999 Johnson 5hp and I can't get the lower unit off. I've removed the 2 exterior bolts and it drops some but thats where I'm stuck. Was expecting a coupler on shifter linkage, but I don't even see the shifter linkage. I am after the impeller, so if you have experience with this model and there's more surprises ahead please let me know. Please help and thanks for your knowledge.

I don't know your motor, but the parts explosion for it shows a connector that appears to hold the lower shift rod to the upper shift rod. There are a bunch of parts that connect all of that to the shift mechanism on the steering handle and I'm not quite sure where the connector is located. I would look for a cover on the upper end of the midsection or in the pan of the lower cowling.

Your best bet is to purchase a service manual and you can probably do so right here at iboats. My comments might give you an idea of where to look, but the problem with working on a motor that way, is that you can easily disconnect something that you don't need to and that might end up being a pain to get back together.

The joint clamp / adjuster between the upper and lower parts of the shift rod is accessed via a cover on the side of the leg.

Mark the two so that you get them back in the correct positions relative to each other.

See the mid section drawing and the shift and tiller handle drawing in the parts catalog. http://shop.evinrude.com/

See the gearcase diagram for water pump details.

A few little bits and pieces to keep track of and refit in the correct locations but it all looks pretty straight forward to me.

Thank you Vic.S, thats what I was looking for. I knew there was an easy step I had not figured out. Now to tackle the water pump. The seal on top is rusted to the housing. Is there a good way to clean that up or should I drop the money that I don't have on the housing? Almost seems like there was a metal sleeve in there? Thanks again.

Thats the seal around the drive shaft in the top of the pump housing?

Its metal and rubber construction and there is a metal "garter spring" in the recess to hold the seal lip tight against the shaft

All the metal bits should be stainless steel

Sounds as though a non stainless one has been fitted. I think I'd get a genuine replacement seal. You'll have to inspect the housing to determine if that has to be replaced. If its only slightly damaged where the seal fits in I'd probably fit the new seal with a smear of sealant of some sort.
